Thirsting for Knowledge Thursday – 7/21/11

Have you ever been working for a long time on a project,  and suddenly your neck and back begin to ache? This happens to most people, and yet there is an easy way to alleviate some of the pain.

One thing you can do when sitting for long hours at your sewing machine is to take breaks, or to get up periodically and walk. Even if it is just to the other side of the room and back, this short walk will help relax you and allow your muscles to loosen up briefly.

Another thing that can help is stretching. Either stand up and do full-body stretches, or just sit up straight in your chair. Raise your arms as high as they will go above your head and to the side. Tilt your head back and stretch out your back, being careful not to stretch too far.

Two other easy ways to prevent back and neck pain is to have your seat at the correct height for you while working, and to hold your hands and arms properly at the machine.

With a few easy adjustments, you can rid yourself of some of the pain that comes along with long hours at the sewing machine. Your back, neck, and hands will thank you for it!
